How Meditation for Beginners Helps Busy Moms

Let’s talk about meditation for beginners. A couple of years ago, after I had my first daughter, I was struggling with post-partum depression. I could usually somehow struggle through my day, and then I’d crawl into bed and my anxiety would skyrocket. I had so many things on my mind: my health, work, my new baby, breastfeeding, schedules, feeling totally overwhelmed by life. I was exhausted, but couldn’t sleep. Then someone told me about the power of meditation.

My first though was: that’s a total crock.

I figured there was no way it could help me, that there was no way I’d be able to quiet my brain enough to fall asleep. But I figured, hey, might as well try it. It can’t hurt, right?

So I downloaded Headspace, a meditation app that guides you through 10-minute meditations nightly. And you know what?

It worked.

I actually FELT BETTER. I was quieting my thoughts. I was starting to be able to separate myself from the bad thoughts and realize that’s all they were: thoughts. Not reality. That’s a powerful realization that I only came to through meditating. I imagine that meditation can help so much with parenting too, and that’s where Ali Katz comes in.

Ali Katz is a friend of mine, founder of A to Zen Meditation. She’s a local mom, meditation coach, and author, who teaches other people how to practice self-care and become a more mindful parent. She helps people find the balance and patience in their busy lives. And she specializes in doing his for moms. Who doesn’t need that?

Ways that meditation for beginners can help you:

1. You will become less reactive and more responsive, so less yelling at the kiddos and feeling horrible afterward.
2. Teaches you to have more compassion for yourself and others.
3. It boosts the immune system.
4. It helps to regulate sleep patterns and digestive patterns.
5. It helps overall feelings of joy and peace.
6. It helps to decrease stress and anxiety.
7. It. helps with PMS and chronic pain.
Pretty incredible list. The fundamentals she teaches her client sound simple, but they take a lot of practice to master. For instance, you can tell yourself that’s it’s ok to have thoughts, both positive and negative, but it takes a lot of practice to truly be okay with both. Like any habit, it takes many hours to master, and that’s why meditating every day, even if you only have 5 minutes, can make a huge difference.
Have you tried meditating? Has it helped you in your life?
Right now, Ali is offering her new class Better YOU = Better MOM, which  is a three week class is made just for busy moms wanting to learn to meditate. It is simple, convenient, and right to the point. To learn more about A to Z Meditation and to sign up, visit her website

  1. Meditation is something I haven’t tried and like you think waste of time. After reading your experience might have to change my mind.

  2. I recently read 10% Happier and have been curious about meditation ever since. It’s hard for me to quiet my mind but I think that’s exactly why it would be good for me!

  3. I thought the same about meditation, too, but my best friend’s parents make me a believer. I used to get really obsessive about things… like it was all I could think about. And usually it was fears of what if? and after they shared with me ways to clear my mind, to breathe, to “escape” if you will, I’ve been a fan since.

  4. Meditation helped me so much with all three post pregnancies. Once you learn how to do it, it is amazing the health benefits!

  5. I have a hard time getting to sleep, for many reasons, and have never considered meditation. The benefits that extend beyond helping one to get to sleep sound so amazing. Like you were in the beginning, I’m thinking this sounds too good to be true but it won’t hurt to give it a try. So, I’ll start with the Headspace app and see what happens. Thanks so much for this information!

  6. Thank you for sharing your story! I have been struggling with some “stuff” lately and could use some help. I tried a mindfullness practice, but it left me feeling worse then when I started. I’ll look into this!
