Maternity Fashion: Third Trimester Style

If there’s anything a 38-weeks-pregnant person doesn’t want to do, it’s get dressed up. Maternity fashion probably isn’t the first thing on your mind. You’re at the point where your feet hurt, nothing seems to fit, and you’re generally exhausted. That doesn’t make putting on makeup and rocking high heels sound too fun, does it? Sometimes you have to do what you have to do, and this past weekend was one of those times. My amazing in-laws received a prestigious and well-deserved honor, and I knew I wasn’t going to miss it. It also meant I was going to have to figure out something to wear.

I admit I enjoy being pregnant and I enjoy dressing the bump. During both of my pregnancies, I loved shopping for maternity clothes and putting outfits together. But third trimester dressing is different; by the end, there’s really nothing you can do but get comfortable and rock the preggings. You know… pregnancy leggings. So what was I going to wear to a gala where everyone was going to be looking their best?

Thankfully, I have a friend in Houston designer David Peck, whose new line Miles David is both versatile and gorgeous. I’ve known David for many years, and have always loved his sleek designs. I found this awesome sleeveless collared dress in his beautiful new boutique, and no, it’s not maternity. It’s one of his best-selling styles, looks beautiful belted or not, and bonus: it has pockets!

The theme for the gala was “Under the Big Top,” and I knew everyone would be wearing sequins, so I chose to layer it with this fun, sparkly cape. The cape fancied up the look without making it heavy or fussy. Of course, I brought my flats with me because I knew I wasn’t going to make it the whole night in those shoes! My friend and photographer Jessica, founder of Paperhearts Photography (she also shot our holiday card/maternity pics!), graciously shot this for me before we headed to the gala so that I didn’t have to get dressed twice. Now that’s a good friend.

It was a fabulous night, and believe it or not, I felt great in this outfit and was actually really comfortable… high praise for someone at this late stage in the game.

  1. What a cute outfit! I loved wearing dresses when I was pregnant.. So comfortable! Almost as much as yoga pants and leggings! Ha! How are you wearing heels though!? lol.

    1. It lasted all of 5 minutes 😂 They looked so much better than flats! I took them off almost immediately when I got there haha

    1. Once in awhile, it feels good to put them on! Then you walk around for a little bit and you’re like “nope, this does NOT feel good.” 😂

  2. I love that the dress is not maternity and you can belt it after having your baby. It’s beautiful and the cape is gorgeous also. You look radiant and ready for a night on the town.

  3. You’re still sexy and pretty in your outfit! I’m so glad that you still have a fashion when it comes to your maternity fashion.

  4. You look so cute! When I was pregnant with my little girl, it so hard finding flattering clothes because I’m so short, but you’ve given me hope!

  5. When I was pregnant I had 3 pairs of pants that were so comfortable I wore them all the time. Since I has 3 babies in three years, those pants got a lots of use. I don’t know how you wore heels at week 38, good for you.

  6. This is a really cute outfit on you. It is so hard to find something or even feel great looking when you are in your third trimester. I love this outfit and the style.

  7. You look stunning. I’m almost done my first trimester with #7 and just looking at you looking so radiant makes me sad. I seriously dont know if I could pull this off, but it looks incredible on you!

  8. You look absolutely stunning in that outfit! And congratulations on your third trimester, that’s very exciting! Thank you for sharing this wonderful post with us, and good luck with your new baby! 🙂

  9. What a great outfit!!! You look super cute!! I adore the cape. Gosh it would go with everything…and make a good background for pictures, even. really cute!

  10. I have to say I am always so impressed with women who can look so put-together and polished while being pregnant. I think if that ever happened to me I would want to be in lounge pants all the time. – Katy
