Why Your Kids Need A Capsule Wardrobe This Season

Are you on board with the whole capsule wardrobe thing? When it comes to kids fashion, there’s really no end to how much money one can spend. Believe me, I know. With two little girls at home, I find it hard not to buy them every cute thing I see. But that’s why I’ve been trying to figure out this whole capsule wardrobe for kids thing… they grow SO fast, it seems like a waste to spend a small fortune on clothes they’ll wear for a hot minute.

I’ve been working on being thoughtful with my shopping, and this is one way I’m doing it.

On the other hand, I’m all about shopping small and shopping for quality. I really, truly believe in supporting other small businesses with my dollars, and I believe in knowing where my children’s clothes are made. It’s sad to think that another child might have made the dresses my daughters are wearing, and it’s a real problem.

So I’ve been focused on paring down their wardrobes to a few manageable capsule wardrobe items each season, and it seems to be working. I don’t get bored with their outfits, and they can mix and match everything they have. It’s also easy to incorporate pieces from the previous season if you stick to a color theme. Win-win for everyone!

Look, mom: we both know that our kids’ wardrobes have a tendency to get… shall we say… out of hand? I, for one, have bins and bins of clothing that I’ve put away for Tova, and a lot that she’s already outgrown. It’s a pretty insane situation in our storage room. I’m finally getting it under control. The capsule wardrobe has helped a lot in that department, making it easy for me to purge the things that I know I won’t be needing. Some things I wonder why I ever saved at all. But that’s a topic for another day.

I might also add that you’re probably already doing this and you didn’t realize it. Most people do buy their kids a few new items each season. But it’s all about being thoughtful and considering how many outfits you can make out of a few key pieces. I put together a good round-up of items that to consider for this upcoming Fall & Winter. All of these items are perfect for mixing and matching, and will carry you until Spring easily.

How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe for Kids This Fall and Winter

1. The perfect, minimalist dress. Every little one needs a neutral dress she can wear with literally anything. The Brynn Dress we created for the cuteheads FW16 collection is perfect for Christmas or just running around.

2. Comfy gold shoes. Metallics go with literally anything, and these Freshly Picked hard-soled moccs can be dressed up or down.

3. A cute, kitschy sweater. I love that this little owl jumper is neutral enough to pair with everything else shown here, but gives a little pop of color when she wants it.

4. Chambray shirt. I love a chambray shirt with tulle skirt, layered over a dress, or with jeans/leggings. It’s a must-have for any little one’s wardrobe.

5. Puffer vest. One of the most important elements to the capsule is layering. This puffer vest is cute, comfy and will create warmth when needed.

6. Funky scarf. I know my little one HATES scarves, but when they’re this cute, she’s actually all in. This little fox scarf is pretty much everything.

7. Casual dress. Love this sweet little button-down dress, and paired with the moccs, puffer vest and scarf, it’s a winning look.

8. Knit cardigan. A soft and cozy cardigan never goes out of style.

9. Sweet bows. I love this cute little bow, it can either make the outfit, or just add to the look. It’s a sweet, subtle pattern… just enough.

10. Funky tights. I love these little gray tights, the heart pattern is so sweet and would work so well with gold moccs and a white dress.

11. Peter Pan-collar tee. This super-soft, long-sleeved peter pan tee is the perfect layering tee. The polka dot pattern gives it that little something special.

12. White t-shirt. A white t-shirt is a crucial layering element for any capsule!

13. Tulle skirt. I love the subtle sparkle in this tulle skirt. It’s perfect for pairing with any of the tees or the sweater.

14. Quilted jacket. Absolutely love a metallic moto jacket for myself… why not for a little one?

15. Star clips. These star clips are some of my favorite clips; the colors are so perfect for cold temps. That hunter green is pretty amazing.

  1. Love this! I try to do a capsule wardrobe for my son but it is definitely much easier for me than him. Mostly because it’s hard for me not to buy for him. But I’m working on it.

  2. I LOVE this! As a mama to 3 kids in 2 years, I fully know the investment related to clothing. I am passionate about ethically made clothing as well and just love the idea of a capsule collection. Now to get that organized!!
