Flower Girl Dress: The Making of a Custom Design

It’s no secret that I love custom cuteheads orders, especially the all-important flower girl dress. When someone trusts you with something as critical to a wedding as a flower girl dress, you better be able to deliver. It used to scare me to design such important pieces, that I’d disappoint brides on their big days. As the years have gone on, and my confidence as a designer has grown, I find the challenge fun and exhilarating, and I especially love the pictures I get at the end! I don’t take on as many custom orders as I used to because I just don’t have the time, but flower girl dresses are my favorite.

So when my stepsister Jenny asked me to design the flower girl dress that my own daughter Naomi would wear for HER wedding, my head started spinning with ideas. I was almost overwhelmed by the possibilities. I loved that I’d be designing something so special, especially for my little one on her debut walk down the bridal aisle, but i loved that my own family member trusted me with such a big task.

Flower Girl Dress Details

First and foremost, the bride wanted me to incorporate the lace from her wedding dress in the design, an idea I absolutely loved. The lace was some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen: ivory and floral, and so unique. I knew I needed to feature it prominently, and I knew I wanted to be able to really see the detail work in it. We left the sleeves unlined to really show the intricate designs.

Next, the bride chose a gorgeous outdoor venue in the middle of Northern Massachusetts. The venue was very shabby chic, and even with no decor at all, it would have been a gorgeous spot for a wedding because of all the greenery and history of the place. So I knew the dress needed to be ethereal, almost like Naomi was walking on a cloud. Her hair accessory was a wreath of baby’s breath, perfect for the overall wedding theme.

I chose to make the entire bodice from the lace because I wanted guests to be able to see the petals of the flowers in the lace. each sleeve was carefully crafted to retain the lace’s beauty. And we created a keyhole cutout in the back of the dress for an extra surprise detail.

We topped the creation off with a gorgeous cascading satin bow and satin buttons down the back of the dress… the icing on the cake.

Thank goodness for my incredible team of seamstresses, who brought this creation to life like no one else can. The woman who sewed this design is truly a master at her craft, and I’m so lucky to have her on the cuteheads team, sewing the dresses my customers love so much.

Of course, I have two little girls, and while Tova isn’t old enough to walk (or even stay up late to party), she was the cutest honorary flower girl. I can’t take credit for her dress, but she still looked adorable!

Creating a flower girl dress is a labor of love, especially when it’s for one of your own family members and your daughter actually is the flower girl. I’m thrilled to report back that the dresses was a total hit, and I can’t wait for her to wear it around the house, which I’m sure she’s going to want to do as soon as I let her.

Happy Monday! xo
