If I’m being 100% honest, I wasn’t completely sold on the idea of pretend makeup for kids, even though I’d seen it on lots of blogs and social media. I have two girls, so raising them with the right messages and positive reinforcement about their inner beauty and strength is so important to me. But every single morning, Naomi watches us get ready. She loves to get involved, take our lotions and our toothpastes, and pretend she’s getting ready too. She sometimes takes my makeup brushes, though I never give her anything messy (mostly because I don’t want to waste any of my good makeup). Once in awhile if she asks, I’ll dab lip gloss on her lips or sweep powder across her face. She gets the proudest look on her face.
So when Little Cosmetics contacted me about working together, I had to give it some thought. Their cute products include all kinds of fun “fake-up,” like lipstick, lip gloss, blue, eye shadow and a full set of brushes. Seeing as Naomi is so into makeup already, I thought, “why not?” And I’m SO glad I did. Because she couldn’t have been more excited to play with it.
We set up a little table and gave her my makeup mirror to look at herself as she “applied” the makeup. She kept asking me to come join her, and asked if she could apply it to my face too. Turns out she’s quite the little makeup artist.
Makeup isn’t just about covering flaws, it’s about enhancing your true beauty and having fun. I love finding and using new products, and I love that Naomi was having fun emulating me. It was a really cute bonding experience, one that actually captivated her for more than 10 seconds, which I can appreciate! It’s also really small and travel-sized, so it’s coming with us on our family vacation too.
I tell her that she’s beautiful inside and out, and that she never needs makeup, but that it’s fun to play with.
Have you tried pretend makeup before with your kids? What did you think?

This is so sweet! I loved doing this with my daughter, now 9! Now I use my real makeup when we “play” with my stuff. Thank you for sharing!
I was in the same boat as you! I thought about getting Ellie play makeup for over an entire year bc I was worried about the message I was teaching her. We gave her a Little Cosmetics set for her birthday and she absolutely loves it! She has so much fun playing with it and now she mostly keeps away from mine. Win win!
Oh my gosh, I need to get this for my niece. I have two boys so it’s hard to be able to do anything girly with them but this would be perfect for my niece lol
I need this! Pax is obsessed with makeup but he always destroys mine. He can have “his own” now! Love!

I don’t think there is anything wrong with fake makeup – it looks so fun! In fact I want to go buy this for MG right now. She LOVES playing with mine so this would make her day!
