Every Kid Loves Ice Cream
Is there a food more universally loved than ice cream? I still remember the first day Naomi had it for the first time. The first time I ever had ice cream is the stuff of family legend now, so it seemed only fitting that I let my dad give Naomi her first ice cream too. She tried it at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo last year, and she’s been hooked ever since. Like her mom, she’s a big fan of rainbow sprinkles, and can you blame her?
Shopping Small for Ice Cream?
It seems like every time I go to the grocery store, there’s a new brand of ice cream or gelato to eat with my eyes. It’s easy to go for the bigger name brands, because they’re familiar & comfortable to us. I myself am an ice cream loyalist, and partial to certain flavors, but I was REALLY excited to try Choctal, for a couple of reasons.
The first is that this is a small batch brand with a really cool story. They only source the highest quality cacao and vanilla from eight hand-selected regions across the globe. Offering these unique regionally-sourced flavors makes for a memorable and educational tasting experience and provides a fun and delicious way to get the kids together and explore the world map. Their World Tour (one pint of each of their eight origins) satisfies a little sweet tooth craving the all-natural way, while providing a cultural experience.
I find it so awesome that they’ve combined education with ice cream, two things that are VERY important in our household. So while we were eating our Indonesian vanilla bean, we read a little bit about Indonesia. If you read this blog often, then you know we only focus on indie brands and small businesses (because they make the world go ’round, right?), and Choctal fit in perfectly with that mission.
But How Does It Taste?
Freaking amazing. If you thought there were just “chocolate” and “vanilla” in the world, then this ice cream is going to blow your mind. The 4 chocolates and the 4 vanillas we tried all had unique flavor profiles and tasted very different from one another. It definitely opened my eyes to what ice cream can taste like, and was a totally new eating experience for us.
My favorite was the Indonesian Vanilla. It had a distinct sweetness that made it pretty impossible for me to put down. My husband was partial to the Costa Rican Chocolate, which reminded him of an amazing trip he took to Costa Rica almost a decade ago. It definitely has a bit of a coffee undertone to it, if you’re a fan of coffee ice cream.
I doubt my 2-year-old noticed these complex flavor profiles though, she was just busy enjoying any and all ice cream she was allowed to have. Basically what I’m getting at is you can can enjoy this ice cream on a number of levels, regardless of your age.
