How to Make Unicorn Bark

I can’t be the only one who’s mesmerized by those cool food videos on Facebook. You know the ones; they suck you in, and have you wondering how in the world they do that. I recently saw one showing a dessert I’d never seen before: unicorn bark. It’s definitely one of the prettiest things I’ve ever seen, and unlike other things made in these videos, it could not be easier to make.

Lately I’ve been missing my time with my 2 year old. The new baby needs me 100% of the time, and sometimes I don’t get to give her the one on one time she deserves, so I’ve made it a goal to do fun projects with her when it’s just the two of us. As it turns out, telling 2 year old’s they get to make candy and eat it is the way straight to their hearts. Naomi was so excited to try this! And it really is so easy, it’s the perfect activity to do together. There’s really no cooking involved, all you need is a microwave.

How to Make Unicorn Bark

You start by choosing whatever color melting chocolates you want. I love bright colors, so I chose blue, red, pink and white. Then put each color in a separate glass bowl. Microwave each until melted.

You then plop blobs of each color onto a baking sheet. Be a little careful, because the chocolate is hot. I didn’t let Naomi do this part. Note we did not spray anything on the bottom of the pan or use parchment paper.

Then take a knife (we used a regular butter knife) and swirl the colors around until you have your desired effect. Naomi kept mixing in the same spot, and we came dangerously close to making brown unicorn bark, but I we salvaged it. 😍 Add lots of sprinkles in any color and texture you like.  Put the whole thing in the freezer for an hour, then break it up with your hands.

I put mine in individual serving bags to give away. Of course, we kept some… ok, a lot.

Naomi was so proud of what she’d made! It was so much fun working with her to bring this to life. After every step, she’d ask me, “NOW can we eat it?” It was totally adorable. I got to spend some qt with my little one AND I got a delicious treat out of it… win win.

What do you think? Will do be making unicorn bark with your kids?
